Help Create Jobs in Haiti: ACDI/VOCA Nears Donation Goal for Job Creation Project

Good news! Our generous community and staff have moved us to within less than $5,000 of our donation goal for a job creation program in Haiti to help rebuild the rural economy in and around Jacmel.

Putting Haitians back to work will put much-needed money into the pockets of families who have lost so much in the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake.

Help Jump Start Haiti’s Rural Job Growth

ACDI/VOCA designed the $100,000 Rural Economy Acceleration in Haiti (REACH) project to disburse small grants to local Haitian nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the Jacmel region to create jobs and aid job training. ACDI/VOCA knows from experience that building local capacity is key to revitalize Haiti’s rural economy.

The project is scheduled to begin mid-June. If our fundraising goal is met—hopefully exceeded—we will adjust the scope of the project accordingly. REACH was designed with a minimal budget to be expandable based on funding: the more we raise, the better we’ll be able to get Haitians working again.

All donations—large and small—will help realize the full potential of REACH: Every donation of $50, $100 or more means more jobs and job training for local people in the Southeast Department of Haiti.

To all of you who have joined us to rebuild a stronger Haiti, we say “Thank you.”

Help Boost Local Businesses in Rural Haiti

REACH will target local Haitian companies in construction/carpentry, manufacturing, artisan business development, and water and sanitation. ACDI/VOCA selected the Southeast Department, focused in and around Jacmel, because of our established presence there and our current project efforts to strengthening Haitian agriculture and rural enterprise.

All donated funds will be administered and monitored by our 50-person team on the ground in Haiti.

Ongoing Haiti Relief, Recovery Work

ACDI/VOCA also continues to assist in broader Haiti relief and recovery efforts.

Since the Jan. 12 earthquake (through March 31), ACDI/VOCA has reached 147,923 people with USAID emergency food aid. In addition, ACDI/VOCA has distributed seeds for beans, corn, peas, sorghum and manioc to 3,117 farmers in the Southeast Department.

ACDI/VOCA also has resumed its original food security work in Haiti, which includes:

  • disbursing micro-grants to farmers to help procure equipment and labor;
  • setting up demonstration plots and seed multiplication sites for beans, corn and sorghum;
  • distributing food to pregnant and lactating women, infants and young children younger than two, and malnourished children younger than five;
  • providing family planning services to adults throughout the Southeast and training health agents and community volunteers; and
  • developing an "Early Warning System" for the 2010 hurricane season.
